This study proposes a solution for identifying riverbank erosion in the Ma River Basin using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform in combination with Landsat 8/9 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. Based on the proposed scientific framework, an automated workflow was developed to detect erosion-prone areas from multi-temporal remote sensing data acquired during the period from 2017 to 2025. To accurately identify riverbank erosion areas, auxiliary datasets including the JRC Global Surface Water dataset and the SRTM Digital Elevation Model were utilized. The workflow consists of river mask generation, water body extraction, shoreline change detection, and erosion area identification. Water bodies were extracted using the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI), while the classification threshold was automatically determined using the Otsu algorithm. Based on this workflow, an automated erosion detection program was developed on the GEE platform. The results show that Sentinel-2 imagery detected 1,211 riverbank erosion areas with a total area of 317.90 ha, whereas Landsat imagery identified 1,803 riverbank erosion areas with a total area of 485.86 ha. Both data sources indicated that the largest erosion area occurred in 2025, and the average area of each erosion feature was approximately 0.26 ha. To verify the results, the identified erosion areas were compared with reported erosion locations in Vinh Hoa, Luong Trung, and Cam Van communes. The comparison showed that erosion sites in these areas were detected by both Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8/9 data, demonstrating the applicability of the proposed method for riverbank erosion monitoring.
